Blockchain Job market in Europe
The CHAISE project commissioned three annual reports to estimate anticipated trends in the supply of graduates with blockchain exposure and demand for blockchain skills (online job vacancies). Below you will find a summary of the latest (2023) report.
Future Demand and Supply
Forecasting estimates indicate that the anticipated supply of graduates with blockchain exposure will be sufficiently high to satisfy the expected demand for graduates across the EU-27 (2021-2026).
Country-Level Variation
In most EU-27 countries, the expected supply of blockchain graduates is projected to be sufficient to meet demand, though skills shortages are projected in some countries.
Experience Shortage
There is some qualitative evidence that skills shortages exist for roles requiring more experience (as opposed to graduates), though quantitative evidence is lacking.
Sectoral Challenges
Insights from field experts indicate that regulatory uncertainty, a lack of use cases and low levels of public trust in blockchain technology hinder growth in the sector more broadly.
Job Distribution: Software and Application Developers dominate the blockchain-related job market, constituting 58.4% of the workforce. Other significant categories include ICT Professionals (21%) and Business, Database, Legal and other Professionals (20.6%).
Sectoral trends: the sector is experiencing a unification of legal and policy frameworks on crypto assets, which is contributing to the strengthening and expansion of the European Blockchain Ecosystem. Challenges such as lack of standardization, privacy and security risks, and technological misconceptions are being addressed. Consequently, there is an escalating demand for skills related to smart contract development, decentralized finance knowledge, and blockchain adoption.
Education & training: education and training courses identified by the CHAISE consortium are gaining traction across the EU, with a focus on blockchain technology’s relevance and application.
Changes in job ads 2021-2022: in the job market between 2021 and 2022, there was an increased demand for blockchain-related positions such as Technology Communications Managers, Information and Administration Services Managers, Business Managers, and Legal Professionals. Conversely, there was a decreased demand for Software and Applications Developers and Database and Network Professionals.
